npn or pnp transistors

I'm looking at a few different fuzz pedals that I have and I am wondering if you could use a combination of pnp and npn transistors in the same circuit and what might happen if you did or is this just not possible????

First off - I build pedals and tweak em etc..  but am by no means knowledgable in the exact electronic sciences.  That said, I'm not sure if it's possible because they run on different power configurations - I would defer to anyone with a more complete knowledge of the inner workings of these devices on the validity of that last statement- therefore can't be mixed.  Then again, try it and see...  best case - no sound, worst case - blow some trannys.  If you aren't using expensive NOS trannys I'd say go for it!   It is most certainly possible to modify a pnp circuit to accomodate npn trannys.
