I'm looking into building a fuzz pedal and since I have little experience playing with one, I am wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. Sonically, I'd like an effect that yields a good lead tone; pretty much a thick lead tone when I'm really driving it, but I would also like it to respond well to dynamics. Preferably, this would mean I could get a significant difference in fuzz between hard and soft picking with the pedal set right. Versatility is also a plus. So far, this criteria has led me to the 3-knob Tone Bender because it has the ability to yield some smooth lead tones but is not as aggressive as the MKII, and therefore would seem to be able to have more dynamic range. I also like the idea of a tone knob. Other advantages are that the pedal can be made with two out of the three trannys being silicon (thanks for that fact) which saves a poor college student money. If I were to build this pedal, I would probably go for the General Guitar Gadgets version based off the F*lltone S***Bender because of the tweaks and fixes it employs.
I will also include a funny smiley because it is my first post and for my own (and hopefully readers') amusement. -->
Anyway, thanks for sticking with this after all that rambling. Any thoughts, anyone?
i've got the fulltone soul bender and i built the axis fuzz. i would go for the second one because of versatility.
>>it can do almost everything (very responsive, not responsive at all, smooth, aggressive, it can even sound almost like an overdrive), the smooth pot lets you adapt the fuzz to your guitar.
>>you can easily try every transistor on the market
>>it's easy to build
the soulbender has less versatility and can be smoother, but it doesn't cut trough the mix like the axis at very high attack/gain settings.
