Is it constant high-gain hiss or a sound that fluctuates/changes over time? Also, does reducing the attack and/or level pot reduce the hiss/noise? My first advice would be to check the board for any soldering mistakes or bridges, also capacitor orientation +/- going to the right places? Transistors oriented correctly? Which trannys did you use?
