HELP! Tremulus Lune question with photocoupler

I'm building the 4ms tremulus lune project version created by Philip on this site.  I've got a question

Now the part I have has a set of wire sticking from both ends, which is what confuses me.  Does one leg of each side get soldered to the board, and the other pair get soldered to the LED contacts?  The page above has the schematic, and here is the PCB layout:

Here's what Philip says he did on his webpage:

"This design also uses the LED/LDR combo to couple the LFO to the input and output stages. I mounted the rectangular LED so that its face was right up against the LDR, and wrapped a small piece of black electrical tape around them so that no stray light would find its way in."

So I have an LED that has a set of feet which I get where they go from the PCB layout, but how do I solder the photocoupler?  The LED I got from the partslist isn't rectangular either.  Can anyone help?

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!!!
Doug
