Axis Face Questions and Modifications

I've just created a new forum section specificall for the Axis Face circuit, so if you have any questions about the circuit or modifications to the circuit, post them there so we can keep them all in one place so they're easy to find!

I'll move all Axis Face-related questions to the Axis Face section of the forum.

First I try to figure out where the volume knob sounds best, either somewhere in the middle position 4-6 or near the top 8-10 because it sounds different at lower settings, a touch more highs when turned up more. All this has to do with how much boost your amp likes to see and also depends on how loud the amp is set...and...anyway back to volume knob tuning...

I choose the '470 - 1k2' value and use that to set for where I want to use the volume control.

I suppose one could use a 500k volpot and use a bypass cap..but that's another thing too.

Suffice to say that the volpot, and the 1k2/.047uf 'work together' to set voicing, and output boost level, messing with the values of the 1k2/.047uf can make the volpot work slightly different in the boost/amount of highs department.

Then there's the gain knob, Small Bear sells the taper that 'works right' in the Fuzz Face !!!

A Face will sound voiced different with the gain knob all the way up, so I 'don't' add a 4k7 or less resistor across lugs 1 and 3 to lessen gain,...and do add...about 220ohm [or less] between the Fuzzpot and ground [to raise gain] to fine-tune-set where the gain knob sounds good...setting the gain knob about 9/10ths, then 'tuning' it for a chosen max gain...which also of course depends on stuff like input cap value, transistor gains, pickups and amp used etc.

Skipping past the basic FF schem, and moving to the Axis Face is recommended, further, final tunings as above may get your rig a bit more mileage. A FF doesn't 'sound' at all without a rig, and will sound different through yours than mine...

The Axis Face values [1k2 and .047uf] are very well targeted, I'm using a 1k though, and I'm able to set the volume knob a bit higher...and have less max output, the volume knob resists highs less when turned most of the way up...

Anyway some things that can be 'fine tuned' for small functional changes.
