Hi all, I've been building effects for a couple years by using existing artwork but would like to try building circuits from scratch by using perfboard. I figure this is a great way to really become familiar with circuits. I bought a few small pad-per-hole boards @ RadioSuck(did I say that?) Pulled up a schematic of a booster and was a bit lost. Wondering if anyone can recommend sources for learning this technique.
I would get a few schematics and practice putting the circuits together on a breadboard. It can help you figure out your perfboard layouts and give you practice reading the schematics. You can also (easily) experiment with different parts/values to get the sound you like before soldering it all together. Here are a couple perfboard projects with detailed instructions that might help a bit also: http://www.diystompboxes.com/sboxforum/viewforum.php?f=6 http://www.smallbearelec.com/Projects/TweakO/TweakO.htm Good luck.
All the circuits I have built (around 12) have been on stripboard and have all worked. I had no previous electonic experience but have found it Ok so far. There is a lot of info on the net on using it and there are some simple circuits on General Guitar Gadgets website for boosters and a distortion.
The only one I have had trouble with (apart from simple debugging) was the Brian May Treble booster (off Aarons site) which worked very well for a while and then packed in. I tested everything and all seemed OK but there was no output.
The good thing about stripboard is that it is pretty robust so I just desoldered everything and managed to re-use most of the parts apart from the transistor and one of the resistors which saved me around £0.30, was it worth the effort? It is very good for swapping parts to try different values as it stands up to being re-soldered quite well, and if it does get damaged the new board is simple to make and doesn't require any caustic or toxic chemicals to make a new one.
