Hornby Skewes & BSM Treble booster

I was looking at trying to build a Hornby Skewes treble booster instead of plunking down $250 for a BSM HS but I'm a little but puzzled.  On the BSM site they talk about how they choose their germanium transistors but the schematic on your site and over at GEO shows an FET...  Was there another Hornby Skewes treble booster??  I'd really like to DYI a Ritchie Blackmore box... Hope someone can enlighten me here...

AFAIK, there was only one HS Treble Booster...and even it was produced in small numbers.  The HS Treble Booster isn't a very good design...from looking at its lack of an input capacitor, I would say that it was meant to stay on all the time.

I would build either a version of the RangeMaster or RangeBlaster or the Brian May Treble Booster...they'll be much better.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Phillip....  I'm going to look at bulding a rangblaster and a brian may mess with the bias. I've seen some versions with different input and output caps. I think I may mess with that after I get the transistor biased... I do like the idea of the reverse biased diode idea you got from plate to plate .. I'd like to tune it for my guitar and amp anyway. ( strat and non master marshall ) The parts are cheap enough to experiment.

Thanks again,

Paul :)

I have recently built two Rangemaster type clones using AC125 transistors, one positive earth and one negative earth for use with my usual pedal line. Both have worked perfectly but you have to use 1w resistors rather than the usual 0.25w or they hiss badly at full gain. There are only 4 caps, 3 resistors and 1 pot aside from the transistor so it is not a diffiult project and I wouldn't go back to my old treble booster again unless I had to.

Hello Hello--

I'm pretty sure that the HB schematic at Fuzz Central was meant to be used with the Zonk Machine [and not as a stand alone treble booster].

Brian.
